Post-Graduation Work Permit

Beyond being allowed to work part time, Canada also provides international students with opportunity to gain Canadian work experience. Unlike many other countries, Canada is a leader in this area.

"International students who successfully complete their programs may receive up to 3 years of open work permit called the post-graduation work permit (PGWP). This work permit allows graduates to work and live in any place of their choice in Canada without restriction on the types of jobs they can accept."

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a PGWP, you must have completed a program of study that was at least 8 months in length at a designated learning institution (DLI). You must apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation from your institution that you have completed your program.

The length of your PGWP depends on the length of your study program. Programs of 8 months to less than 2 years receive a work permit valid for the same length as the program. Programs of 2 years or longer qualify for the maximum 3-year PGWP.

Your PGWP is an open work permit, meaning you can work for any employer in Canada in any location and in any field. This flexibility allows you to explore career opportunities and gain the Canadian work experience needed for permanent residency applications.
